There are no 'wasted' heartbeats. The ones you use to get in better shape pay lifetime dividends. We recommend an hour a day at a predermined percentage of the target range, no less than 15 minutes non-stop. So 3 sessions of 20 minutes (or 2 of 30) would be the best to raise HDL and lower the other lipids.
