Subject:         calcium supplements for women?

Dr. Pinckney, I read your reply from February:

"Some studies have found that calcium supplements may increase the risk
of mortality from heart disease in men. As a result, it is often
recommended that men avoid calcium supplements. Food sources of
calcium are not reported as a concern."

But what about for women? My doctor wants me to take 1500 mg of
calcium a day because of my osteoporosis risk (my mother has it) and
bone loss I've already had. But I'm also at risk for cardiovascular issues
(thanks, Dad), with chronic cholesterol issues despite my low-fat vegan
lifestyle.

My father died at 72 from his second heart attack (his first was at age 50).
My mother is 96 and despite several falls in the last few years, has only
broken a shoulder. I'm 60, with a BMI of 19.9.

Opinion?
