Most studies try to reflect the general population. In the China Study, Dr. Campbell clearly describes the various populations studied, and most of the research in the books of Dr. Esselstyn and Dr. Ornish compare groups with and without a specific condition, such as coronary artery disease.

The studies of body builders, marathoners and extreme athletes (other than the many anecdotal reports used by marketers of eggs, dairy, etc.) in the main indicate that the risks of poor diet apply equally to these groups as well.
