Since high blood pressure is a serious risk factor for a number of life-threatening conditions in addition to heart disease, it's important to do whatever is necessary to lower it to the 'normal' range. If within a month or so one can't see a significant reduction with lifestyle adjustments, then medication may be a reasonable option. Millions of people are taking medications to control hypertension without having any side-effects. For the few who do experience unwanted side-effects, it's often possible to switch to another med that has no negative effects, as there are many options now available.
