In an angiogram a catheter is inserted into an artery and fed through to the heart. A dye medium that enhances radiographic images is released into the coronary arteries, so pictures can be taken to determine the location and extent of blockages. Since there are many different types of catheters, one would need to know what the purpose is. In addition to angiograms, some are used to compress plaque to increase blood flow, to cut out and vacuum deposits and others to insert a stent.
