Flax seed is not a requirement. It is a good vegan source of omega fatty acids, but in recent years these same nutrients have become available from algae. There is still no definitive research on whether vegans need to supplement with omegas. Many vegans do fine without these, but others feel that the supplements are important to protect them from coronary events. I've been vegan over 18 years, have never taken omega supplements, and blood tests have shown I'm not deficient in these.
