Dr. Pinckney,
today I had bad news from a test on Osteoporosis,
as it came positive for those bone losses. I am afraid because
my mother died from femur fracture complications. I know of my
old friends (I am 71) dying because falling and fracturing
femur and getting complications too.
I went to a bone doctor and he said that I should do exercise
(I already walk 30 minutes 5 days a week) and get sun light (I
don't go to beach to get sun, but here in Rio sun light is
plenty and I believe it gets through clothes. I tend to avoid
sun directly to my skin to reduce skin cancer chances.
He gave me a prescription of Fosamax to have it before eating
anything in the morning, once a week and calcium supplement.
My wife uses Fosamax but the side effect is a possibility of
ulcer (what she has now).
I remember that one of the doctors that goes to Vegsource
events is against medicines for osteoporosis (could be Dr.
Fuhrman?). Dr. Esselstyn in his book recommends calcium
supplement among others. I don't see vegan guidelines on this.
In fact I am feeling alone in this problem, considering that
for almost 4 years I gave up milk and other calcium animal
sources. I am afraid my vegan opponents might say? " I told
you so"...
I would be happy if you could comment on this problem and what
papers or suggestions I could see to fight osteoporosis while
keeping vegan lifestyle.
Ricardo
