There may be a connection between periodontal disease and heart valve health. Whether or not the health of one's teeth has a direct effect on coronary artery disease is less clear. In the recent past is was considered essential to administer a course of antibiotics before doing intensive dental surgery, such as a root-canal, extractions or periodontal surgery - with the belief that the heart, especially the valves, could be dangerously effected. But last year the American Dental Association reversed that recommendation after finding there was no scientific evidence that it was an effective procedure. Nevertheless, since some studies have concluded that oral health and heart disease may be connected, it would be prudent for anyone with heart disease to maintain good oral hygiene.
