Subject:         coffee and sweets

I drink 3 mugfuls of coffee every day and I eat sweetened cereal and candy on a pretty regular basis. Other than that I keep to the 10% rule for fat calories and eat no meat, fish, dairy nor oils. My combined blood cholesterol with diet and medication hovers around 105 and my blood pressure without medicine is around 110/70.

I had a heart attack in September of 2008 and have been on the Essylynn diet for over a year. I wonder if my eating too many simple carbs and drinking coffee is in any way keeping my heart disease from being reversed. I am making a concerted effort to limit the candy to one night per week. I usually eat a whole bag of marshmallows on that one night. I am eating my mildly sweetened whole grain cereal two or three times per week, the other days I eat oatmeal with artificially sweetened pancake syrup and raisens.

I also eat a lot of fat free pretzels. I am questioning whether this may in any way slow or stop my recovery, even though blood pressure and cholesterol are doing good.


I do exercise. I walk about 40 minutes 7 days per week and do resistance exercises twice per week in a gym.

Is there anyone else out there in a similar pattern? Or is there any reason for me to change this pattern? I am beginning to think there may be.
