Please explain why a vegetarian of 16 years - yes I do eat cheese - has a bad cholesterol level of 163! My blood pressure is normal and my good cholesterol and triglycerides are low. I am 5'3" and weigh 120. I am also 49 years old and exercise at least 30 minutes 3 times a week.

My doctor has put me on 40 mg of simvastatin nightly in hopes of lowering my cholesterol. I think it is also important to tell you that I am under stress, I am a care giver to my epileptic husband.

Can my genetic make-up and stress levels be increasing my cholesterol? Can non-fat,no cholesterol food convert to the "bad cholesterol" in a person that is genetically predisposed to heart disease?

I am very disappointed that my careful diet has not helped my cholesterol problem.
Thanks
