McDougall actually has an article on his site in the Hot Topics section that talks about HDL, and he makes the case that low HDL isn't worth your attention if you can get the other numbers down. There are citations with the article. I believe that Esselstyn and others also point to several societies around the world where the average hdl is in the 20's, and yet they have virtually no heart disease, presumably because their other cholesterol numbers are so low. I care about this too since my hdl dropped into the 30's as my total dropped to 87 on this program. I think it's going to be extremely difficult to find any studies other than Ornish's or Esselstyn that provide any long-term verification of the claims that low hdl doesn't matter with this diet, but those aren't bad citations in and of themselves. I believe both Ornish and Esselstyn saw low hdl across most of their patients, and yet their results speak for themselves. For now, that's enough for me.
