The body makes HDL based on the amount of total cholesterol in the blood. When the total cholesterol is lowered, HDL is also. Al the studies that indicate low HDL as a risk factor were done with people whose total cholesterol was significantly high. Recently it was found that high HDL is not as protective as originally believed.
