When arteries become blocked, sometimes collateral branches allow sufficient flow of blood to feed the heart muscles. They can handle enough flow to keep the person alive, usually with angina, but they, too, can become blocked by the same poor lifestyle choices that caused the main blockages. You can see an illustration, from the Healing Heart Foundation website (click on the link below). Go to the Healthy Heart Handbook and click on the chapter "How the Heart Functions" and then click on "collateral circulation" at the end of the 5th paragraph.. The most important factor, however, is to reverse the blockages in the main arteries - by following a reversal lifestyle plan. When that occurs, the collateral branches are no longer needed.
