The data collected from participants in my support group included total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, VLDL and triglycerides, age and weight. Participants indicated if they had been a smoker (they had to totally stop smoking to be in the group), if there was a family history of heart disease and if they had experienced any cardiac events. These data were not collected for publication, but just for our own information.
Obviously, other factors play a part in reversal, among them: smoking; amount, type and frequency of exercise; dietary compliance; stress management; presence and control of diabetes; family history of CAD and other medical conditions and medications taken for them.
The Framingham study indicates that when one brings total cholesterol below 150 mg/dL, the chance of a heart attack is extremely small. Many of the risk factors were already addressed in that study, but in general it might be assumed that total cholesterol was the significant factor.
Some recent studies have concluded that triglycerides may be far more important than HDL related to cardiac event prediction, but total cholesterol is currently the most established prediction factor.
