Two years ago a heart cauterization showed I have a 70% blockage in two arteries and a little less in the other. At the time my total cholesterol was 183 (not excessively high) and LDL of 125 and due to the results of the cauterization my cardiologist put me on blood thinner and Lipitor at a low level. I have a family history of heart disease and I became a vegan after the discovery and do weight training 3 days a week and speed walk 4 miles 4 days a week. My total cholesterol has been in the low 120’s and LDL right at 60 for over a year. Last year, with the consent of my cardiologist, I went off the Lipitor for 7 weeks to see what the vegan diet alone would do. The result was total cholesterol of 167 and LDL went to 103. This was disappointing to me as I did not keep the cholesterol below 150 as recommended in this forum. As a result I went back on Lipitor. This week’s cover article in Business Week (January 28, 2008) (see address below) talks about satins in general and Lipitor specifically. I have wanted to get off the drug all together but my total cholesterol and LDL levels are above the ones this forum recommends. My question is if I am a vegan and exercise as much as or more than the recommendation, what else can I do to get the cholesterol levels down so I can get off the medication? An alternate question would be are 167 and 103 acceptable levels? http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/08_04/b4068052092994.htm
