Americans typically consume three to four times the amount of protein their body needs.

Excess animal-based protein can be detremental to cardiovascular health and can also cause loss of bone strength by causing elimination of calcium.

Protein supplements are rarely needed, although endurance athletes and weight lifters have often been led to believe they need to supplement protein intake (usually by those who sell the supplements). Typically those who burn more calories have a higher caloric intake, and that usually includes sufficient additional protein. Only a careful nutritional assay and medical examination can determine if a protein deficiency exists.

Nutritional yeast, while not specifically called for in a heart disease prevention or reversal diet may be a benefical addition, but only in moderation. There is rarely any reason to supplement with large amounts of it.
