In by-pass surgery, an artery supplying blood to the heart that blocked with plaque is by-passed with a vein taken from another part of the body or a diverted artery. It's like a detour which allows traffic to go around a place where the road is blocked. Quintriple or 5-by-pass surgery means that this is done for five different blackages. This disccussion group and the Healing Heart Foundation website (link at the top of this page) shows people how to avoid those blockages and to reverse them without surgery. In most cases, if people who have by-pass surgery don't change their lifestyle, they'll usually have the problem come back again, with an even greater risk of dying of a heart attack.
