I used to wake up in the middle of the night with a pounding heart. After the second time it happened and did not stop after a 1/2 hour, my husband took me to the emergency room. There, the hospital physician tested my blood and found I had a high T3 level caused from an over active thyroid. It seemed strange because several months previously, I had tested postive for hypo-thyroid or underactive thyroid. I went to an endocrinologist(sp) who put me on Methimazole 3x's a day. This helped w/the the heart rate as I was constantly on beta blockers. Also, I recalled what I had eaten previously to these attacks and the worst offender was chocolate. Both times I had eaten either chocolate ice cream or a candy bar. I told the doctor but he doesn't see any correlation. There is very little information out there on Hyperthyroid. There is much on Hypo. I hope you can find what is happening to you as this is a very scary experience. Good Luck,
