HDL levels are also a function of the amount of total cholesterol, so it is not unusual to see HDL come down a bit when the total, including LDL is lowered. If LDL doesn't go down, one should look at alternative methods of lowering cholesterol, but in any case, following a diet low in fat and animal-based foods should be pursued. Also, regular aerobic exercise helps raise HDL.
