Subject: Is aspirin as good as prescription drugs to thin blood

I need to take a blood thinner of some type to let my platelets flow and I have heard aspirin is just as effective as Plavix and other prescription drugs and a lot cheaper. Have any studies been run on this?
Also is there studies I could read as to diet,reducing cholesterol and exercise reversing plaque in arteries?
