In the 1970's, many runners had the attitude (sadly still prevalent today) that they could eat anything they wanted and still stay healthy as long as they "burned it off" afterward by running. There was even a theory that anyone who could run a marathon was "heart attack proof." Jim Fixx believed in this and he paid the price. Nathan Pritikin gave an excellent critique of these sort of theories in his book Pritikin Diet for Runners.
