Our recommendation is to follow the path you've indicated you intend to try. Dairy products are a major factor in high cholesterol. Exercise can raise HDL, helping the body eliminate the cholesterol that blocks arteries.
The potential links between thyroid and cholesterol are not clear, with some studies showing a possible relationship. There is always the possibility that hormone imbalance can effect lipids, but it isn't very common.
Since you experience some health phenomena that are not typical in your family, it is just as likely that you may have inherited a tendency to higher cholesterol than others in your family. Even so, a program of a very low fat diet and exercise should be effective in achieving your goals.
