Triglycerides are the most common type of fats that are found in blood. High triglycerides mean a high amount of fat globules circulating in the bloodstream, a risk factor for heart disease, stroke and other disorders.

You mention using olive oil. The best way to lower fats in the bloodstream is to reduce or eliminate the amount of oil - of any kind - in the diet.

Oil is oil is oil. Olive oil may be a healthier choice than lard or butter, but it has the same fat content as any other oil.

Avoiding fried foods, high fat foods (such as olives and avocados) and all prepared items that are mostly fat (regular salad dressings, mayonnaise) will help lower fats in the blood.

Many sweets, especially popular candies, are very high in fat (over 50%) as well as high in sugar. Kids often get these at school or from friends - more than parents often realize. Packing your kids' lunch for school is helpful, but the trading of kids lunch items isn't unknown.

Simple carbohydrates (sugars) also can raise triglycerides, so cutting down on all forms of sugars, including large portions of sweet fruits, can help. Complex carbohydrates, those found in whole grains, legumes and vegetables, do not typically raise triglycerides.
