A low carbohydrate diet does not have to be a high fat diet. I consume no more fat than I did pre-Atkins.

News shows like Dateline, 20/20 et. al., do NOT show a balanced view of low carbohydrate eating. They go for what is sensational, what they think will shock and tittilate viewers. They are, after all, more interested in ratings than they are in journalism.

I actually know a number of low carbbing vegetarians, and belong to an email subscription support list for them. I am writing a low carbohydrate cookbook, and am working hard at developing low carbohydrate vegetarian recipes. It IS possible to follow a low carbohydrate style of eating and be a vegetarian; it's just harder.

The only thing I worry about with low carbbing vegetarians is their large consumption of unfermented soy products. There have been some rather alarming medical articles come out recently about the possible detriments of eating too many unfermented soy products (like tofu).

I hope these reports are exaggerated; vegetarians have a tough enough time getting an adequate enough amount of protein without eliminating soy products from their diet. I am not knowledgeable enough to discern whether they are or not. But I think that vegetarians who consume large amouns of tofu or other unfermented soy products should be aware of these disturbing POSSIBLE problems, so that they can read up about them on their own and make an informed decision on their own.
