The benefits of these omegas are realized whether they come from flax oil or animal sources, but flax seed is one of the richest.
If one is not a vegetarian, the source would not be important. Eating salmon, for example, might give one a small amount of omegas, but it would also give animal proteins and cholesterol.
Many people prefer to use the seeds, freshly ground, on cereal or other foods, rather than the oil, which has a strong taste and quickly becomes rancid.
The recommended amount is one teaspoon daily of flaxseed oil or one tablespoon of the seed, both yielding the same amount of oil.
Your physician should be providing you with "scientific proof" of what s/he recommends, not asking you for proof for what you do.
