For reversal of coronary artery disease, the formula many experts agree on is to set one's maximum heart rate at one's age subtracted from 220. The target rate would be about 80% of the maximum rate, although anywhere from 40% to 90% might be right for some individuals. That would also assume that the person is not taking any medications that effect heart rate and that there are no physical conditions that would be a problem. The 'logic' behind 15 minutes as a minimum of aerobic exercise has been established through wide testing to determine when cardiovascular benefits become effective. It was previously thought that one needed to exercise at least 45 minutes at one time to get full heart benefits, but later research showed the same benefits if each session was at least 15 minutes long. |
