For persons following a heart disease reversal lifestyle, there's no real need to even contemplate protein amounts. Ornish recommends 10% to 15% of calories from protein, but there's no evidence that amounts up to 20% would be harmful in healthy persons. Sadly, the typical diet of most Americans has three to four times the amount of protein than is needed, and this can lead to a number of serious disorders. We recommend legumes as a daily source of essential nutrients, with a balanced and sensible variety. Although most legumes are fine, some beans are very high in fat, and should be limited.
