What works for me is equal parts of finely ground sugar and baking soda. I've used this outside many times with good results.

What happens is that the sugar draws the ants and the baking soda does the job on them. They don't necessarily eat it where it's at, but they take it home to share, which is a good thing.

This would probably work inside too, but I haven't had the problem since knowing of this recipe.
