I use rubber snakes and other toy creatures that look like they would scare me if I were a small furry mammal. I have to keep moving them around as the squirrels are smart enough to figure out the rubber creatures aren't real. I have pots on my deck full of beets right now and caught a squirrel sitting on my deck railing munching away on beets he had pulled up. I got out my snakes (should have done that first!) and have not seen a single squirrel on my deck since. My garden is full of rubber snakes and a lizard or two.
