You might want to check out http://squarefootgardening.com/ I grew my first real garden as a grown up this summer. It is a 15' x 15' raised, terraced bed and I used his book Square Foor Gardening as a guide. I used stones rather than wood so mine was a bit more work to get started and the only part of my backyard that gets enough sun is on a slope so I had no choice but to terrace it. It was great fun and I really did get a fair amount of food out of that small area. I had hoped to use some season extending methods but discovered that the backyard is in the shadow of my house very early into the afternoon this time of year. (Guess I never had any resaon to notice before.) I still have kale and brussel sprouts growing. My son commented this morning how sad it was to see the garden looking so bare as I start to get it ready for winter. I am already looking through seed catalogs and planning for spring. Good luck on your project.
