If the democracy in Iraq is seen as legitimate, and the rebel attacks taper off, and if the US brings the majority of the troops home within 18-months, that will be good and a heck of an achievement.

The doctrine of preemptive attacks will be called a success. The democrats will be seen as defeatist obstructionists. Bush will have a renewed mandate. Republicans (maybe Jeb Bush) will win another presidential term by land slide in 2008 and increase their majorities in the house and senate.
