Maryland Green Party Sees Record Growth The Maryland Green Party grew by leaps and bounds in the two months before Election Day, adding 1,000 new members—a 15 percent increase. That makes the Greens the fastest growing party in the state. There are now 7,506 registered Greens in Maryland, up from 6,500 in August. The increase is likely due to the unprecedented number of Green candidates running this year: seven for U.S. Congress; eight for Baltimore City Council; one for Carroll County school board; and candidates for president and vice president. The overall surge in voter registration statewide also was a likely contributor to the party’s growth. Maryland Green Party co-chair Nina Rutledge said, "Voters are glad to have another choice. They're responding to the Green message of peace, grassroots democracy, environmental protection and social justice. They are welcoming a chance to register with a party that is not for sale. The Green Party accepts no money from corporations, unions or PACs."
