From a religious point of view that is not acceptable to a Muslim. It is very simple, you do view the Koran as a book with mistakes. You view it as a book with a lot of mistakes starting with the existence of God. These men do not, nor will they. To do so would be anathema. I would not expect them to. They do appear to want to find an out clause, but only within the parameters they have been allowed to have, hence the handkerchief and toothpick arguments, and the "Barbaric" beatings being jail worthy.
And for the record, no I do not nor have I ever found beatings of wives to be acceptable, with a handkerchief or otherwise. I also do not think that it is acceptable for a woman to hit her husband even if he is being a butt. (I do not count sparing and view it as very different in both intent and action)
