in the minds and memories of those who suffered under the fascist regimes of wartime Germany and Italy. Similarly, the swastika was a perfectly acceptable symbol among American Indian tribes of the southwest (found on rugs, paintings and crafts--my mother's college annual from the early 1930s from the Univ. of New Mexico had the swastika on the front); but it was hijacked by the Nazis and is now non grata. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with the salute or the symbol, any more than a burning cross, a pointy white hat, or a noose; but they represent ideas that we as a nation find unacceptable.
