You might be able to speak intelligently about history.
"All the Shah's Men" is a good start:
http://www.lightmillennium.org/2003_summer/kinzer_shahs_men.html
It's the story of how the US used terror in the 1950's to overthrow the first democratically elected government in Iran, using murder, terrorism, false flag operations, etc., in order to install the Shah and his secret police.
Hold some hostages for a year (while wrong -- and only until Reagan purchased their release while running against Carter) is nothing compared to the murder, mayhem and injustice on a huge imperial scale the US imposed on Iran.
You obviously don't know a thing about it. Read a book, based on recently released CIA records, and you'll be a bit more informed.
The Iranian people know all about this, and they feared and fear what the US can do, because they know it all too well.
Their seizing of hostages was in response to Jimmy Carter's letting the Shah into the US for cancer treatment, and their very reasonable fear that the US was once again going to try to take over their government for our own oil interests.
Iran is our enemy only insofar as we wish them ill, because they are not a client government like Saudi Arabia is. So the rightwing is gunning for them. We want that oil, and just like we've seized the oil in Iraq and don't plan to go unless/until we can install a puppet government that plays by our rules.
Iran is FAR less of a threat in the middle east or threat to our interests than Israel, which has in recent years succeeded brilliantly in dragging the US into the problems of their own making...
