Unless we as a species, that is, all 6+ billion of us, make some major changes in the way we live, the Arctic ice will soon be gone. With it, the Polar bears. I don't think it has to be. From what I've posted here on the future of solar alone, we could, in the next 10 yrs or so, convert most of our fossil fuel electric generation to solar. Industry analysts project significant increases in panel conversion efficiencies, and prices which will be competitive with coal generated power. For the SUVs that will be on the road for another 20 yrs, biodiesel, plus solar produced hydrogen, could replace oil. LEDs could replace incandescent bulbs. We could resurrect rail transport to replace many of the flights we now take. We could make our homes and buildings much more energy efficient. Regular bicycles, or electric ones could be used on bike paths for many routine errands. The list goes on, and while they may be inconvenient in the short term, the rewards will be tremendous. I think we can do it.
