So the people need to be controlled by law (and by religion) because His love isn't enough to transform them from within?

It sounds like the older brother in the parable of the prodigal son. That just didn't cut it with him, giving that younger son all that love and attention after all he had done, and all the good works the older brother had done. But the Father knew his son was coming home, and was waiting and looking down the road for him, ran down to meet him, lifting up his robes so he could run faster. Just like with the rest of us, Christ died for us while we were yet sinners, humbling Himself far beyond our comprehension. He didn't yell at us to clean up our act first. The only ones He yelled at were those religious folks who wanted to keep their rules and laws and force them on others, none of this "lite" stuff for those religious folks.

Jesus says His burden is light. It's just not in human nature to understand this though, apart from dying to self and being born again. We have to make it out to be a set of rules we can follow (apart from Him) and force that on others too, including those who haven't had the chance to "meet" Jesus yet.

You know, when ANYONE comes face to face with the real Jesus, they ARE on their faces in repentance. To be in the presence of a Holy God, is to expose our nakedness and our sins. That makes it pretty hard, once we have seen the log in our eye, to point it out to those who haven't met Jesus yet, the splinter in theirs.
