When your enemy wants your land, resources and people for him/herself then yes appeasement can and usually will backfire. But when your enemy just wants you and you evil ways out of their countries and out of their way of life, it isn't appeasment anymore, it's respect for them wanting to live life the way they want to. Comparing Hitler to Osama or any other idealist-extremeist is comparing apples to oranges.
