It gets ugly here in CA over immigration reform. Those who speak the loudest are those from Mexico. Here in CA an illegal immigrant can obtain free medical, collect welfare, and receive food stamps. They can even attend our universities for free if they fill out the right paperwork. OK, I understand the role migrant farmworkers play in our nations agriculture. I understand the role they have played in accepting low wages and thus, helping to keep prices down (?). I have always believed that America had much to gain from being allies with Mexico. I enjoy their culture, their food, their language, and more. I grew up next to first generation immigrants from Mexico and have been friends and a co-worker to Mexican's. I want their presence in my country- legally. I have a friend who is Mexixcan American. Just last week I had to explain to her what a tomatillo was. I am not sure why she didnt know, except that she is third generation. My friend complains about working with no health insurance. She would like to complete college, but can't afford to. See what happens when you become "enculturated"? My point? At some point those Mexicans fighting against immigration reform are going to be the very ones who pay the taxes to support tomorrows illegal immigrants. If not them, then their children will. Like almost everyone else who has become "enculturated" they will loose some of the allegiance to their homeland (paying taxes to another country will do that to a person). They will be the ones who get stiffed by the govenment for medical and higher taxes, for example, and they will be the next fighters for some kind of reform to have them lowered (or at least stabilized). And I can wait to see Juan, Robertito, and Alicia on the front lines complaining about unfair treatment- from an American perspective!
