Egyptian mystics, Buddhists, Gnostics, Pythagoreans were all vegetarians. The literalist church in Rome made it manditory to eat meat on Sundays to flush out the Gnostics and kill them. Great book......"The Jesus Mysteries" by Freke and Gandy
