Then their votes would have counted because Super Tuesday did not decide this time. So, if they would have just followed democrat procedures, they would have made an impact and the race at this point would have been much clearer (possibly).
I agree with you though, super delegates and the electoral college are both clunky vestiges of a system that does not trust the voters to decide for themselves.
As for having one voting day, it makes it hard for the candidates to actually speak to each state individually and give their message in such a way as the message is still fresh when the people actually vote. Of course, spread voting has the negative effects of candidates evolving their messages over time and making themselves look potentially wishy-washy.
My personal opinion is that primaries are crap anyway. I think all candates should be on the ticket in November and it should be a run-off election. But the power mongers in the two-party system would never embrace something that may endanger their monopoly.
