Sorry, I've never had one (couldn't afford it with my wages), however my friends and I attended the YMCA to workout. There was this totally great guy there--the personal trainer--who worked with all sorts of people with all sorts of issues. He treated each one and helped them according to their needs. We saw him working with a stroke victim in an ever-so-gentle fashion; the next day he was working with a young woman who wanted a heavy duty workout--and WE SAW RESULTS. He simply adjusted to what each needed. One day one of my friends was using one of the machines incorrectly and he broke from the person he was working with for a moment or two to show her how to use the machine correctly. He was very good natured about it (ie. didn't treat her like an idiot). I can tell you that, if I could have afforded it, I would have gone with him at the drop of a hat. I guess what I'm trying to suggest is to observe how trainers work with people before making a decision as to whom to pick. Watch their personality, their work ethic, whether they push in a good manner or bad. Get a feel for how they would treat you. Good luck! Wendy (from the McDougall board)
