Subject:         tempeh?

I have a friend who recently decided to go vegan. He was telling me of some food called tempeh, made of mold. If i were allergic to penicillin, could I eat this? I am curious to taste it. I want to be supportive of his decision.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
