I've struggled with my lipid levels since doctors started measuring them in my 30s (I'm now early 50s). I've had varying degrees of success controlling them through my lifestyle -- always depending on how well I'm able to stick to the straight and narrow.
In other words, if I can actually consistently be as rigorous as I need to be, I can bring my lipid levels under control without statins, which my doctors have continually tried to get me to take, because it's just easier (for those who can tolerate them). But I've always balked.
Two years ago my doctor again wanted to put me on a statin after my numbers got way out of whack again because of a prolonged period of not being diligent enough about what I eat. I refused, insisting I wanted to try again through diet.
And it worked. Last year when I was retested, she was amazed at the results. I had gone from what she described as high risk for heart attack and stroke in 2005 all the way to low risk last year.
My next blood panel is a few weeks away, so it'll be interesting to see how I'm doing now.
Good luck to you!
