I've been coincidentally been reading over again books by Neal Bernard and Dean Ornish, my husband is on two meds for high blood pressure and I am trying to help him.

There is no doubt that a low-fat plant based diet can get you off high blood pressure meds. It is also extremely helpful for gallbladder issues. You might want to read one of Ornish's books, as I think I mentioned before I pick most of mine up in thrift stores for two or three dollars.

You should do this along with monitoring by your doctor, although most doctors probably don't believe that you can lower blood pressure and cholesterol without drugs (and you will see that almost everybody could if eating the correct diet) -- you need to monitor with a doctor so as to not do something dangerous like go off medications all at once.

It's really very exciting information for anyone with health issues who is willing to get to the core problem, not just cover up the symptoms with drugs. Most people are not willing to change their diets to that extent, and it does require a complete change from a standard American diet. I applaud you for having the courage and the interest to take your health into your own hands.

As far as taking other kinds of things (flaxseeds, oats, etc.) to lower blood pressure, I don't know if that works but it still doesn't go far enough back in the "causal chain" as Dean Ornish puts it. If you eat a standard American diet full of saturated and other fats, animal products, fried foods, and junk foods, adding something to lower blood pressure will not be enough to stop the accumulation of plaque which eventually leads to heart disease and stroke.

Good luck to you, keep reading, get healthy and discover you can feel really good and still enjoy delicious and wonderful food. If you have questions about foods or cooking this is a good place to come for answers, there are a lot of really knowledgeable people here.
