I first toyed with the idea of buying a rice cooker in 2000 when I saw them mentioned on the McDougall board but I kept thinking that stovetop and microwave are fine. What finally got my attention was reading a Business Week online article about Movie critic Ebert who brings a rice cooker to Sundance to cook all his meals of a variety of foods and has lost 90 pounds.

While researching brands of rice cookers I ran across a recommendation for a cookbook:
"The Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook"
by Beth Hensperger and Julie Kaufman
It's a terrific cookbook despite having to omit certain ingredients in some recipes. Many recipes are already vegan, all are health oriented and interesting. Pumpkin grits, wild rice with dried cherries and scallions, prune couscous, 32 rice pilaf recipes, polenta. It's my current favorite cookbook and I am nuts about my rice cooker which I use at least twice a day.

Usually when I cook rice I use only 1 of the little measuring "cups" of brown rice then toss in some spice (curry is my favorite), then stuff the rice cooker full of veggies when the rice is 1/2 hour cooked. I have a "three cup" small size which is perfect for 1-2 people. I plan to take it when I travel just like Ebert does.
