When I was in Germany I read a joke about Germany cuisine that said "The only dish you can get in Germany that does not have "meat" in it is fish." That struck me as just about true since they toss meat into potato and vegetable dishes with wild abandon and every meal seems based around a huge chunk of meat on a platter. That's contrasted with a culture that walks everywhere and walks for pleasure as well as transportation. But they LOVE to eat, so there are little restaurants situated a few miles from towns and you walk on trail through woods to go eat sausages and drink beer. What I noticed was an entire nation of unhealthy looking middle aged men in particular. Overweight, red in the face, sweating with little exercise, pasty looking unhealthy skin. Much more so the men than the women. Perhaps the women feel more free to shun beer and eat muesli and veggies and German men are culture bound to eat meat and more meat and wash it down with beer. They are an excellent "bad example". But if you are contemplating a trip there, I found that I COULD get meat-free meals. It's harder than some other places but doable.
