I teach at a university in Hong Kong, and we have a monthly tutorial system that involves discussions between a faculty member and a small group of students. Today we were discussing the experiences of one of the students who went to the University of Waterloo in Canada for an exchange semester last fall. The other students asked him if he liked the girls there (in Asian countries, western women have a reputation of being rather wild and loose). He said he wasn't impressed because they were all fat. He was pretty clear as to the reason for this -- a typical lunch for these girls was half of a large pizza. He also described his experiences during a 10-day visit to New York City. The other students asked him if the girls were any different there, and he said no, they were about the same, except for the ones in the Broadway musical he attended. I felt kind of sad listening to this description of my homeland, but since I had no grounds for disputing the validity of his statements I just kept my mouth shut and let everyone else talk. (Perhaps I could have told him that half a pizza was just the tip of the iceberg, but I didn't want to add fuel to the fire.)
