I have yet to find a food that there isn't a good alternative for. Got an ice cream craving? Try Soy Delicious or Soy Dream, they're delicious. You can also make your own ice cream, I bought an ice cream maker last summer, store it in the freezer and make ice cream whenever I feel the urge. I got some recipes off the new veggies board, others I find in cookbooks. Want cheezecake? Bryanna has a delicious Pumpkin cheezecake that you'd swear has cream cheese in it, the secret ingredient is ground cashews. I also have a great cheesecake recipe, probably from her again, that uses Better than Creme Cheeze, it's a plainer variety you can put blueberries or whatever on. For cheese, I use Bryanna's melty pizza cheese on nachos and quesadillas, I have learned to make pizza without it and my husband even loves my pizza, so do kids, cheeseless, can you believe it? Again, I use Bryanna's recipe from the Italian cookbook, the secret here is to use a homemade sauce (in the cookbook) and drizzle with olive oil before baking. Speaking of eggs, I much prefer tofu scramble -- not the boxed kind but my own made with nutritional yeast, tumeric, onion and garlic granules and tamari -- sometimes adding chopped veggies -- to the old bland scrambled eggs I used to eat. I can't even imagine eating them again! And you can make wonderful frittatas, omelets, and benedict with tofu too that are better than the "original." What I suggest you do is twofold: First, explore the world of vegan foods by getting some great cookbooks. I love Vegan Planet, except for the breakfasts, for that I use mostly Bryanna's recipes, her french toast, chickpea waffles, benedict, tofu scramble, waffle iron hash browns are all recipes I use over and over. Subscribe to Veggie Life, I got some great recipes out of that magazine. I also like Soyfoods for a Positive Menopause, Nonna's Italian Kitchen, and 20 minutes to Dinner. Whenever you crave something, find a good alternate. Ask for specific alternates on the New Veggies or Vegan boards. Make a looseleaf binder with the recipes in there, I have two big ones full of great recipes. The other suggestion is simply to think of the animals when you are tempted by animal products. Think of the calves whose milk it is humans take to make yogurt. Think of their short, sad lives and then look to find something that will satisfy your craving. Once you have been vegan for as long as I have, for five years, you will undoubtedly have an alternative for everything you currently crave. There is no need to feel deprived on a vegan diet, rather, it is a delightful journey full of surprises and good food. Good luck and hope this helps!
