John C.,
My question is, how do you know what the "majority" of ethical vegans are like? Answer me this, do you know anyone in real life who is an ethical vegan? Have you ever met/had a conversation with one? (Not online but in real life?)
I am talking from experience, as an ethical vegan who knows many other ethical vegans that in general we are not an intolerant bunch. MANY of us live with and love omnis - how could we do so if we're soooo intolerant? My bf would be the first to tell you that I never get in anyone's face and am very conscious of trying to make others feel comfortable around me when vegan or animal related topics come up. In fact, he thinks I'm TOO nice. He thinks I should give people the straight, detailed unvarnished truth about why I'm vegan when they ask me, even if I don't know them well and we're sitting at a dinner table and their plate is loaded with meat! (I usually respond with a true-but-vague statement about how I feel better eating this way, and then change the topic.)
As for "unamerican" and "antifreedom, how do you feel about conservative Christians who are trying to control which books high schoolers read? Who are trying to control which movies are on TV? I read about these things on the news every day, but I've never read a news story headlines, "Ethical vegans storm school to force them to remove meat products from cafeteria."
